Recipe type: Drinks
Cuisine: American, Southern
Serves: 1 drink
Ingredients
  • 2 full sprigs mint (Kentucky Colonel mint is the best, but any works)
  • 1 teaspoon superfine sugar (toss some regular sugar in a food processor)
  • 3 ounces Kentucky bourbon
  • crushed ice
  • silver julep cup (I used THIS one)
Instructions
  1. Chill silver julep cup before starting for best results.
  2. Take one mint sprig and rub the inside of the cup with a bit of force. You want to bruise the leaves, but not rip them up. I've found this is the best way to transfer the delicious mint oils into the drink in the classic, authentic way.
  3. Fill glass completely with crushed ice.
  4. Combine superfine sugar and bourbon. Mix until dissolved.
  5. Pour over ice.
  6. Place straw with second mint sprig directly beside (so you can smell it when you sip).
  7. Enjoy and repeat.
